October Birthday Gemstones...Opal and Tourmaline

October has two birthstones, the Opal and Tourmaline.

The Opal derives its name from the Latin word "opalus," meaning precious jewel. Prized for its unique ability to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light. Most of the world's Opal deposits are found in Southern Australia.  Other sources of this gemstone are Brazil, Mexico, Czechoslovakia and Nevada. Ancient monarchs treasured Opals, both for their beauty and for their presumed protective powers. A gift of Opal is symbolic of faithfulness and confidence.

Tourmaline, perhaps the most diverse gemstone available possesses a dazzling array of colors. Tourmaline is esteemed as a gem of enlightenment and resolution. The name tourmaline means multi-colored, a modest description of the variety that exists, which includes dark green chrome, deep blue to blue-green indicolite, pink to deep red rubellite and watermelon tourmaline. Color determines price, with lively, mid-colored gems. A gift of this stone is symbolic of hope.
